Scoliometer & Inclinometer

An app for iPhone

A scoliometer and inclinometer, in your iPhone.

A measuring tool for physiotherapists and other professionals who work with posture. It uses the phone's motion sensors and shows the angle as one large number you can read from a distance and at an angle. No internet, no account, no patient data.

Two modes

An arc for the back. A line for everything else.

Scoliometer

  • A curved scale with a ball that rolls like the bubble in a spirit level.
  • Near zero, the number and the ball turn green, and the phone gives a light tap as you get there.
  • An optional warning threshold, such as 5° or 7°. Past it, the number slowly turns orange. You set it yourself, so it's a reminder, not an assessment.

Inclinometer

  • A line that stays level with the floor, with the number tilting along with it.
  • Suited to range-of-motion work: ZERO at the starting position, read the value at end range.
  • Nothing lights up near zero here. Blue means only one thing: a custom ZERO is active.

You switch between the modes in the menu and choose which one the app opens in.

Taking a reading

Built so an unreliable reading doesn't slip through.

ZERO
Tap it to measure from where the phone is now. Press and hold to go back to true level, and a ring fills around the button as you hold. While a custom ZERO is active, a badge at the top of the screen says so.
Saving with +
The reading goes to History as the average of the last half second, so the small jolt of pressing the button doesn't end up in the result.
The last three values
They stay in the corner of the screen for a moment, which helps when you're writing notes.
Tilt warning
The phone measures best with the screen held upright. Lean it towards you or away and the scale turns dashed. Lean it further and a warning appears while the number fades.

+9.6

ZERO
Phone leaning too far: dashed scale, faded number, warning at the top.

-8.2

ZERO
Warning threshold set to 7°: past it, the number turns orange.

In practice

Across the back, or along a limb.

In Scoliometer mode the phone rests across the back, at a right angle to the spine, with its middle over the spinous processes. The app shows how far it leans from level. In Inclinometer mode it takes the place of a mechanical inclinometer.

Scoliometer: the phone lies across the back in a forward bend. The app shows the angle α between the phone and level. α level spinous process

Inclinometer: ZERO at the starting position, then the reading at end range. start · ZERO end range

The Help section in the app describes the Adams forward bend test, measuring inclination and getting repeatable readings, and lists the literature it is based on.

Calibration

Once for each phone, case or attachment.

The app comes calibrated. A case or an attachment can still shift the reading slightly, so you calibrate your setup once, standing the phone on its long edge on a level surface. The correction is stored permanently.

The app won't calibrate a phone lying flat, because that reading would mean nothing. And the result is only as good as the surface, so use the most level one you have.

History

Time, angle and mode. Nothing else.

  • One list for both modes. Each entry shows its mode's icon and colour.
  • Show all, today, or the last 7 days.
  • Swipe an entry sideways to correct or delete it.
  • Average: tick a few readings from one series and the mean appears straight away. The app won't mix the two modes in one average.

At the treatment table

The screen is kept for the number.

  • Shake the phone to open the menu. There is no toolbar on the measuring screen.
  • Press and hold the app icon on the Home Screen to jump straight to History.
  • Buttons on the side of your dominant hand, right or left.
  • The screen stays on while you measure and dims by itself when the phone has been still for a few minutes.
  • Haptics and an optional sound confirm ZERO and saving.
  • Whole degrees or tenths of a degree.
  • English or Polish, following the language of your phone.
  • A short tutorial on first launch, and Help to come back to.

Good to know

  • Requires an iPhone with iOS 26.5 or later. The app works in landscape.
  • The result depends on how the phone is placed. Use the same landmark, the same posture and the same depth of bend each time.
  • An optional 3D-printed attachment with a groove for the spinous processes helps you place the phone on the back the same way every time. It is available separately, and the app works without it.
